Maize and Blue

Azure blue, as defined by the dictionaries, is lapis lazuli, Prussian blue, cobalt blue, ultramarine blue, the clear blue color of the unclouded sky. Maize is the color of the Indian corn.

A deep blue color was evidently the original official color of the University [ of Michigan ].

Days

“Official Notice to remove derelict bicycle.”
— DSNY, October 17, 2023
(It’s still there, in every sense, the bicycle seemingly unaware that today is Black Friday – or garbage pickup day in parts of West Brighton…)

Days (Close Up)

No matter how much I cross
I always see the same stream
I’m standing up on these bridges
That are standing in a dream…
Days…
Be more than all we have.

Thanksgiving

Der Wind hat mir ein Lied erzählt
Von einem Glück unsagbar schön
Er weiß, was meinem Herzen fehlt
Für wen es schlägt und glüht
Er weiß für wen
Komm! Komm! Komm!
Der Wind hat mir ein Lied erzählt
Von einem Herzen, das mir fehlt…

[Lyric from my favourite Nina Hagen song, a cover of course, but great version of a great song. Written by Bruno Balz / Lothar Bruhne. Happy Thanksgiving!]

My heart – and my arthritis – belong to Summer. But November can be quite something in its stark beauty.

Prequel

My wife bought this for me on Sunday when she was shopping at Cosco. She knows I like Rachel Maddow a lot. When Maddow speaks she reminds me of my mother: classy, sassy and a bit smart assy. In the book she writes just as she speaks on MSNBC. Witty, erudite and smart. The tome is a history of Hitler’s supporters in tbe US in the 1930s including US Senators. What impressed me, as a journo and erstwhile history minor, is her historical methodology. Top shelf. Extensive footnotes, photos properly credited, thorough index and an intro that identifies the cast of characters. A proper history that is fun to read. Crazy, I know, but great stuff. The writing style is concise and complete and the preface mercifully brief. Clearly she knows that brevity is the soul of wit (and the essence of lingerie, according to Dorothy Parker). A nice holiday gift for that someone special!

While reading Rachel you might want to sing along with John Denver and the Mitchell Trio (sans Chad). “Sing the I was not a Nazi polka!”

“Go Ask Alice”

“Go Ask Alice”

For Robin M

Go Ask Alice

The over-indulgent machines were their children
There wasn’t a way down on Earth here to cool them
‘Cause they looked just like humans
At Kresge’s and Woolworth’s
But decadent brains were at work to destroy
Rats in batallions were ruling the street scene
Generation landslide
Closed the gap between ’em
And I laughed to myself at the men and the ladies
Who never conceived of us billion dollar babies

Dan and Steve

Dan (left) and Steve have been friends for over 45 years. I met Steve Kosnik in Key Food early last Summer. He approached me to say that he sees me riding in West Brighton year round and “my hat’s off to you.” My Enfield was starting to misbehave (stator and rectifier) so we talked bikes for a while. I shot this frame earlier this week when Steve was prepping his 2010 GL1800 Gold Wing for Winter storage. And so I met Dan, who also stopped to say hi to his old friend.

Motorcycles bring us together – ride on!

"Michael"

On Thursday, November 9, I posted a story on facebook about a fellow geezer biker whom I see every time I ride – he lives in my Hood. Over time we started saluting each other, biker style, as I rode past. His jaw dropped the first time he saw my Bonnie and he gave me a big thumbs up. I thought, one day I should introduce myself. That day was Thursday, November 16. We talked for almost 15 minutes according to my GoPro. Turns out Michael has a Sporty and wants a Street Glide. He asked what bikes I had and I told him – he said, “I like that Bonneville.” He said it more than once. But to my surprise he pointed at the bike I was sitting on and said, “Is that a Shadow? Did you paint it? I like the black.” It turns out he likes the Honda Shadow quite a bit and owns a Honda enduro that needs some work. It also turns out that he knows some of the same people I know, including Mark Gotham. Everyone on Staten Island who rides knows and loves Mark. So it was a nice chat. Maybe one day we’ll ride.
