The Book I Read

Shot Of The Day: October 17, 2017

QOTD:
I’m writing ’bout the
Book I read
I have to sing about the
Book I read
I’m embarrassed to admit it hit the soft spot in my heart
When I found out you wrote the
Book I read so

Academic

Shot Of The Day: October 14, 2017

QOTD:
Oh, baby, I remember you
‘Cause your heart is cold
And your blood runs dry
You’ll never see or hear the crashing of the sea
The tempest rise, it stops all time
When lovers eyes are locked in harmony

— New Order

Backstory: Staten Island MakerSpace is a non-profit workshop that helps artists, craftspeople, engineers, inventors, and entrepreneurs by offering low cost access to industrial and digital fabrication equipment and tools. They also provide a variety of skill building classes for all ages. Their ‘MakerPark’ project is an outdoor sculpture park and community work space where artists make and exhibit temporary public art projects. I have photographed a number of these exhibits and thought it about time I show people who is responsible for transforming an empty lot (across the street from MakerSpace) – filled with 18 burned out, flooded, and smashed up abandoned vehicles – into a public art space. The song selected to accompany the images articulates, in its own way, my belief that artistic vision is the only cure for the One-Dimensional Society.

Sweet Leaf

Shot Of The Day: October 13, 2017

QOTD:
My life was empty, forever on a down
Until you took me, showed me around
My life is free now, my life is clear
I love you sweet leaf, though you can’t hear

— Black Sabbath

Backstory: A another gate mural – part of the #100gatesproject – painted by Mona Oman. I hope she’ll forgive my song choice – but this classic Sabbath tune popped into my head when I was shooting her art work. It is great partly because of the unintentionally funny lyric. The wit and wisdom of Ozzy.

Once In A Lifetime

Shot Of The Day: October 12, 2017

QOTD:
Letting the days go by, let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by, water flowing underground
Into the blue again after the money’s gone
Once in a lifetime, water flowing underground

— Talking Heads

Backstory: Another great Stapleton mural – this one done by Gano Grills, a local actor and illustrator well known for his work with Wu-Tang Clan and the classic film Bomb The System.

A Lack Of Sweetness

Shot Of The Day: October 11, 2017

QOTD: I go to bakeries all day long – there’s a lack of sweetness in my life.

Backstory: A great mural and my favourite Jonathan Richman lyric – (gently) extracted from a beautiful song. Perfecto.

Lucida

Shot Of The Day: October 9, 2017

QOTD:
Enclosed in a shrine
Locked away inside my mind
I walk in the darkness and neon lights
Delirium will take me away

— Lacuna Coil
[click here to view full size image]

Backstory: This gate mural (part of the 100 Gates project) reminds me of Lucida Mansi. According to Wikipedia, “Lucida, the daughter of Lucchese nobles, was said to be very beautiful and very vain. She was so cruel and concerned with the pleasures of the flesh that she killed her husband in order to be free to enjoy her many lovers. The legend states that she killed her lovers after sleeping with them by throwing them down a ditch covered in sharp blades.” This image depicts a figure that struck me as a kind of Flying Dutchman harbinger of doom. Hence Lucida, who had a very beautiful garden, very lush and green.

Locale: Stapleton or perhaps Lucca, Italia – the art work is by Terry Lee Chandler, aka #zionlineal, as part of the #100GatesProject.

Immediate Gratification, Immediate Alienation?

Shot Of The Day: October 7, 2017

QOTD: We are born into a world where alienation awaits us. We are potentially men (sic), but are in an alienated state, and this state is not simply a natural system. Alienation as our present destiny is achieved only by outrageous violence perpetrated by human beings on human beings.
— R.D. Laing

Backstory: I heard from a friend that some Staten Island parents give their daughters breast implants as high school graduation gifts. What message are they sending? The song choice reflects my view of this behaviour. To quote a part of Gang of Four’s sarcastic and caustic lyric: Make up makes up for your nature, You’re for seeing and not for hearing…
