One Love

Shot Of The Day: February 19, 2017

QOTD:
This is the inside of your mind
Thinking you could be the right side
This is the run down of mankind
Screaming and the terror and the falling to pieces
No more dreaming. No more living. No more social releases
We got the new guard strutting like they’re in charge

— Jack Grisholm / T.S.O.L.

Backstory: I have a number of acquaintances whom I met on the street. Some turn into friends over time. Others remain casual acquaintances but nonetheless are very friendly – this grandfather and youngster are two people I see every morning as Grandpa bundles his small gift off to school. Grandpa doesn’t speak a lot of English and we don’t know each other’s names but he was very excited when I gave him a copy of this photo. This kind of thing – not hate and xenophobia – is what makes America great. Tolerance. Respect. One Love. — TAG

Locale: Inside a heart beat (Clifton, Staten Island)

Equipment: Nikon D5500 / Sigma 18~200mm f3.5-6.3 DC

Terminal Bar

Shot Of The Day: February 14, 2017

QOTD:
You used to stand at the corner
Smiling, counting cars
But now you feed, your richer life –
You’ve got a seat at the terminal bar

Thin Ice

Shot Of The Day: February 12, 2017

QOTD: You can be smart as hell
Know how to add
Know how to figure things
On yellow pads
Answer so no one knows
What you just said
But when you’re all alone
You and your head…
You’ve got angst in your pants

— Sparks

Backstory: Pigeons overhead make me nervous, they have ‘gotten’ me several times – it’s an occupational hazard for NYC street photographers. So I don’t much like them but I still photograph them. They are so New York, living on a shoestring, dancing on thin ice. Angst In My Pants…It’s just how we live… — TAG

Locale: On the waterfront, Clifton, Staten Island

Equipment: Nikon D5500 / Sigma 18~200mm f3.5-6.3 DC

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — February 3, 2017. Members of Local 52 International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) deployed fake snow on Union Place outside the Paramount Theatre today – the last day of shooting for Marvel’s The Defenders (aka Group Therapy).

“Did we fool you?” one of the technicians asked.

Winter In America

Shot Of The Day: February 4, 2017

QOTD: We are miscellaneous, we did not mean to be miscellaneous, somehow it happened.
— Gil Scott-Heron

Backstory: It’s Winter in Staten Island. It’s Winter In America. We have a lunatic at the helm, driving this Ship Of Fools on to the rocks. God help us. Regarding the quote, which is the introduction to a song called Is That Jazz (from Gil’s live album Tour de Force): I run a group for other photogs on DeviantArt.com. I had to define categories for people to put their photos in. Okay so I did that. But my photos rarely fit into any of the standard categories and so I created a category called ‘How do you spell Miscellaneous’ – I’ll see you there.

Locale: Front Street – New York Harbour, Clifton, Staten Island

Chasing The Promise

Shot Of The Day: February 3, 2017

QOTD:
Once the religious, the hunted and weary
Chasing the promise of freedom and hope
Came to this country to build a new vision
Far from the reaches of Kingdom and pope

— John Kay

Backstory: This old Vic sits atop a hill – a monument to those who came to the U.S. for a better life. The lyric? My fave band as a wayward youth was Steppenwolf. Monster was my fave song from the band. The lyric is excellent – as is the song. ‘America, where are you now, we can’t fight alone against the Monster.’ — TAG

Locale: St. Paul’s Avenue, nee Mud Lane, Stapleton Heights

Equipment: Nikon D5500 / Sigma 18~200mm f3.5-6.3 DC
