Irene

Irene
I took this shot of Irene Pappas in the mid to late 1980s. She used to live on Van Duzer Street near Wandel Avenue in Staten Island. People would speed around the bend where Van Duzer dead ends into Richmond Road, sometimes losing a hub cap. Irene collected the hub caps for resale.

Skating Away

Shot Of The Day: July 28, 2017

QOTD: Skating away – on the thin ice of a new day…
— Ian Anderson

Backstory: On this occasion I was shooting a Nikon D5500. It has a great Sony IMX sensor (no low pass filter) which was a godsend as at the time I was using a Nikon 55~300 lens. Great optics but very slow to focus. The sensor saved me – it grabbed enough detail that the shot works.

Locale: Bay Street, Peoples Republic of Stapleton

Equipment: Nikon D5500 / Nikon AF-S DX Nikkor 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR

Nicht mein TAG

Nicht mein TAG
Nicht mein TAG

We Dadaists are often told that we are incoherent, but into this word people try to put an insult that it is rather hard for me to fathom. Everything is incoherent… There is no logic… The acts of life have no beginning and no end. Everything happens in a completely idiotic way. That is why everything is alike. Simplicity is called Dada. Any attempt to conciliate an inexplicable momentary state with logic strikes me as a boring kind of game… Like everything in life, Dada is useless… Perhaps you will understand me better when I tell you that Dada is a virgin microbe that penetrates with the insistence of air into all of the spaces that reason has not been able to fill with words or conventions.

Jigsaw

Shot Of The Day: July 27, 2017

QOTD:
Jigsaws falling into place
There is nothing to explain
You eye each other as you pass
She looks back, you look back

— Radiohead

Backstory: This is an art installation I found in Tappen Park while en route to work. I have no idea what it is but to me it’s a jigsaw piece – perhaps it fell into place?

Locale: Stapleton

Equipment: Nikon D5500 / Nikon AF-S DX Nikkor 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR

Candy-O

Shot Of The Day: July 26, 2017

QOTD:
Purple hum, assorted cards
razor lights, you bring
and all to prove you’re on the move
and vanishing…

— Ric Ocasek
[click here to view full size image]

Backstory: Candy-O, I need you so…this shot has enough Barthesian punctum that it produced in me a sense of loss, as does Ocasek’s wonderful song – with vocals by the sadly late, always great Ben Orr.

Locale: Memory Lane (aka Van Duzer Street)

Equipment: Nikon D5500 / Nikon AF-S DX Nikkor 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR

Shot Of The Day: July 25, 2017

QOTD:
Then I looked at the sunset
And it felt like a stage set
It’s a burning car…

— John Foxx

Expert Tattooing

Expert Tattooing
This is the storefront of my favourite tattoo parlour. The shop, “Bound For Glory”, recently moved into new digs. In this shot artist Doug Aldrich (foreground) is mixing paint – he painted the exterior signage. But it’s the man in the window who steals the show. (This is one of those shots that you may want to click through…the full size version has a bit more oomph, if I say so myself).
