We Don’t Need Freedom

Shot Of The Day: February 26, 2017

QOTD:
We don’t need freedom
Do we now
Freedom preaches disobedience

Pride waste lust and greed
We’re free to obey all of these
Comfortably that’s how we’ll be
Enough for you plenty for me
We won’t need actors or rock stars
All we’ll want is farmers and soldiers

— Saccharine Trust

Backstory: Here in Trump Nation we need to remember not to ‘exceed the maximum dose of freedom’ – or do we? Regarding the song choice: UK punk produced the Pistols, the Clash and the Stranglers; New York – Television, the Ramones and the Dolls. But L.A. punk produced my favourite punk bands – Black Flag, Circle Jerks, Flipper, Christian Death, X and Saccharine Trust. — TAG

In Colour…And In Black And White

Shot Of The Day: February 25, 2017

QOTD:
Everybody knows
That’s the way things go
All the ties that bind
Heaven knows they’ll flash before your eyes

— Cheap Trick

Backstory: This is one of my favourite locations on Staten Island. The church on top of the hill is now known as Trinity Lutheran, formerly Deutsche Evangelisch-Lutherische Kirche. Built in 1913, it has some wonderful gargoyles. — TAG

He Ain’t Heavy

Shot Of The Day: February 24, 2017

QOTD: You always got to help a brother when he’s in a bind…
— He Is Legend
[click here to view full size image]

Backstory: This is my friend and colleague Simon – when we have downtime at work we wander the neighborhood brandishing cameras. The lyric is from an album called Heavy Fruit by a band called He Is Legend. I like the song because we are our brother’s (and sister’s) keepers.

Locale: Rosebank, Staten Island

Equipment: Nikon D5500 / Sigma 18~200mm f3.5-6.3 DC

Children Of The Grave

Shot Of The Day: February 23, 2017

QOTD:
Children of tomorrow live in the tears that fall today
Will the sun rise up tomorrow bringing peace in any way?
Must the world live in the shadow of atomic fear?
Can they win the fight for peace or will they disappear?

— Black Sabbath
[click here to view full size image]

Backstory: This shot reminded me of a Black Sabbath album cover. I have always loved Sabbath although they are no longer effective for scaring my parents. My Mom knows all about Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne. Regarding the song: the spectre of nuclear destruction is once again resident in the national memory, thanks to pResident Evil and the other fools in high places. God help us. — TAG

Locale: Stapleton Heights, Staten Island

Equipment: Nikon D5500 / Sigma 18~200mm f3.5-6.3 DC

One Love

Shot Of The Day: February 19, 2017

QOTD:
This is the inside of your mind
Thinking you could be the right side
This is the run down of mankind
Screaming and the terror and the falling to pieces
No more dreaming. No more living. No more social releases
We got the new guard strutting like they’re in charge

— Jack Grisham / T.S.O.L.

Backstory: I have a number of acquaintances whom I met on the street. Some turn into friends over time. Others remain casual acquaintances but nonetheless are very friendly – this grandfather and youngster are two people I see every morning as Grandpa bundles his small gift off to school. Grandpa doesn’t speak a lot of English and we don’t know each other’s names but he was very excited when I gave him a copy of this photo. This kind of thing – not hate and xenophobia – is what makes America great. Tolerance. Respect. One Love. — TAG

Locale: Inside a heart beat (Clifton, Staten Island)

Equipment: Nikon D5500 / Sigma 18~200mm f3.5-6.3 DC
