Homeward Bound

QOTD: I wish I was homeward bound…Home where my love lies waiting silently for me. — Simon & Garfunkel

Backstory: Going home today after work I saw this man stretching. I don’t know if he was at the end of his shift, just starting – or taking lunch. But to this weary photog it seemed as though we were both homeward bound…in any case he was very cool about having his picture taken, in fact he seemed to enjoy the experience. New York. I love it.

Locale: Rosebank, Staten Island

Equipment: Nikon D200 / Sigma 18~200mm f3.5-6.3 DC

Cyclicality

Shot Of The Day: May 31, 2016

QOTD: How could I forget to mention the bicycle is a good invention? Sitting there in a silent movie beside the only girl who really ever moved me.

Fishing Silver Lake

Fishing Silver Lake
Memorial Day 2016 – It was getting dark, it was already cloudy, but nonetheless I like this shot of a little girl learning to fish. Her Dad was off to the right, giving her instruction. The locale was Silver Lake Park (Staten Island, NY), the box I used was my banged up Nikon D200, with a AF-S DX Zoom-NIKKOR 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5G IF-ED lens.

All Of No Man’s Land Is Ours

Shot Of The Day: May 30, 2016

QOTD: All of No Man’s Land is ours, dear. Now I have come back home to you, my honey true.
— James Reese Europe, musical director of the United States’ 369th Infantry Regiment, also known as the Harlem Hellfighters.

Backstory: My neighbor Michael is a painter who regularly (re)makes his entire house into a collage, a bit of Merzbau, ala Kurt Schwitters. The piano that sits on top of his fence in this shot was made by Schoenhut, the famous toy piano company started by German immigrant Albert Schoenhut. Given that this collage – the piano, flowers, and flag – only recently appeared I suspect Michael prepared it for Memorial Day. — TAG

Locale: Tompkinsville, Staten Island

Equipment: Nikon D5500 / AF-S Nikkor 50mm f1.8 G

Coffee And Cigarettes

A Nice Conversation

Shot Of The Day: May 27, 2016
for Angela (and Andy)

QOTD: You have to enjoy life. Always be surrounded by people that you like, people who have a nice conversation. There are so many positive things to think about.
— Sophia Loren

Backstory: This is my favourite portrait of Angela – and I thought I’d see how the original would look if I posterised it in the GIMP and painted it slightly, in the style of Andy Warhol. I like this version quite a lot. Whenever you solarise or otherwise convert a photograph into an illustration you never know if it will work. I’m happy with this one. I hope Angela and Andy don’t mind. — TAG

Locale: The original locale was a celebration of Social Work Month – March, 2013. The posterised locale was my version of Andy’s Factory (one of my subterranean lairs).

Equipment: Nikon D40x / Sigma 18~200mm f3.5-6.3
