Backstory: This is a tough corner. The memorial shown is for a man who was hit while crossing the street on the night of October 5, 2015. He died instantly. The liquor store is next door to an apartment building where a man was stabbed on February 8 (he survived). The deli (to the immediate left, outside the frame) was robbed at gunpoint on January 26. — TAG

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — February 12, 2016. On a bitter cold February day a group of retirees from the Communications Workers of America, Local 1102, joined by friends from the United Federation of Teachers, the American Postal Workers Union, and the United Auto Workers, blocked the entrance to the Verizon garage in Rosebank until management called the NYPD.

The picket was small but very effective – union members (retirees) blocked both entrances to the Verizon garage yard at 8 a.m. The Verizon Central Office, located at 180 Edgewater Street in the Rosebank section of Staten Island, has a large parking lot filled with work vans and cherry pickers. By 8:30 on a regular business day these vehicles are lining up to leave the yard. But on Friday they were held in place by some very cold but very determined retirees.

While holding the line, CWA retirees talked to workers entering the yard — and to those drivers who were stalled in their efforts to leave. Eventually management called the police. Two uniforms in an NYPD SUV arrived on the scene shortly after 8:30 and were approached by Buddy, a former president of Local 1102. Buddy explained the reason for the picket to the police. Seeing the police cruiser, two Verizon managers approached the protesters and asked them to clear the exit. A short time later the fleet of work vans and trucks exited the yard as the retirees stood off to the side, holding up their picket signs.
