Trident

Shot Of The Day: December 30, 2015

QOTD: Actually all them gods is just about the same.
— John Prine

Backstory: I like John Prine but I disagree with his assertion, at least in the realm of majestic motorcycles. This Trident is a thing of beauty. My best guess is that it is a T160 (750cc), circa 1975: due to its 5 speed gearbox, forward sloping cylinders, and left-hand gear shift. The Bonneville is my favourite bike but this Trident is gorgeous. I found it on the street in Rosebank, parked on the sidewalk, so obviously it is still running. — TAG

Wouldn’t You Miss Me At All?

Shot Of The Day: December 29, 2015

QOTD: Please, please, please lift a hand. I’m only a person with Eskimo chain. I tattooed my brain all the way…Won’t you miss me? Wouldn’t you miss me at all?
— Syd Barrett

Backstory: Being a cyclist on Staten Island can be a lysergic experience. Here, for example, a cyclist passes a line of cars – including a city bus – that are driving atop the so-called bike lane. A risky business, cycling on the Island, not for the faint of heart or those lacking life insurance. — TAG

Saint Nick?

Shot Of The Day: December 28, 2015

QOTD: When a man tells you that he got rich through hard work, ask him: “whose?”
— Don Marquis

Quote from The Hip Pocket Guide To Offbeat Wisdom by William Sauer

Backstory: Nick is a guy from the neighborhood, he works for a living, he’s no saint but I like him. That’s my story and I’m sticking with it. — TAG

Becky

Shot Of The Day: December 27, 2015

QOTD: Art is meant to disturb, science reassures.
— Georges Braque

Quote from The Hip Pocket Guide To Offbeat Wisdom by William Sauer

Backstory: I met Becky one morning on my way to work. I liked her headdress and she agreed to have her portrait done – in exchange for a pack of cigarettes. I offered one cigarette and she accepted. Times are hard…when she saw the photo she said, ‘Oh, I look terrible!’ I said no, ‘You look just fine.’ I meant it. — TAG

Fehlleistungsprinzip

das Fehlleistungsprinzip
Shot Of The Day: December 26, 2015

QOTD: A man should not strive to eliminate his complexes, but to live in accord with them; they are legitimately what directs his conduct in the world.
— Sigmund Freud

Quote from The Hip Pocket Guide To Offbeat Wisdom by William Sauer

Backstory: I’m very interested in Freudian “parapraxis” (Freudsche Fehlleistung): the unconscious asserting itself in “accidents”, “forgetting”, etc. Marcuse argued that the reality principle (Realitätprinzip) posited by Freud in Civilization and its Discontents was perverted into the performance principle (Leistungsprinzip) by the ruling class. Obviously, I think Marcuse was right. Marcuse also argued that everything repressed “seeks a return.” Right again. Being a Unix person – into treacherous puns, anagrams, neologisms, etc. – I would call the drive that results in unconscious/willful fucking up (parapraxis) “das Fehlleistungsprinzip.” — TAG

Locale: A very cool stall in the Union Square market.

Amnesiac

Shot Of The Day: December 24, 2015

QOTD: I don’t remember, I don’t recall, I don’t remember anything at all.
— Peter Gabriel

Backstory: This is an interior shot taken on the SI ferryboat John F. Kennedy. It is the flagship of its class – and the last survivor of that class, soon to be decomisssioned. — TAG

Discount Island

Shot Of The Day: December 23, 2015

Discount Island by Day…

QOTD: In a world where people have problems, in this world where decisions are a way of life, other people’s problems, they overwhelm my mind. They say compassion is a virtue, but I don’t have the time.
— David Byrne

…and by Night

Backstory: Tina Weymouth once called David Byrne a ‘pseudo-intellectual’ – I resemble that remark. — TAG

Looking For A Kiss

Shot Of The Day: December 22, 2015

QOTD: Dialogue dub, now heres the rub – she’s acting her reaction. She’s in parties, it’s in the can.
— Peter Murphy

Backstory: I’m not looking for a fix, just give me a kiss…a visceral memory from another time. — TAG

Locale: Stapleton – this isn’t a real phone booth, it is a prop I found on the set of the film ‘The Girl Who Invented Kissing’.
