Tricycle (The Best Rejection I Ever Got)

TRICYCLE
Your haikus are too …
intellectual, she said.
Thank you! I replied

Backstory: In 1992 (or thereabouts) I submitted a few haikus to Tricycle Magazine. The rejection letter stated that the haikus were too intellectual. That rejection letter, one of many, remains my favorite. The offending haikus also linger, mainly because I still like them. Hey what do I know? (Much love to Nigel French and Small World Press, thanks to whom these little poems saw the light of day). — TAG

ABSENCE
Memory is but
A broken echo system
Sirens in the night

GEOMETRY
Petra does perfume
her vibrant trace…her longing
fulfills Time and Space

PERLEXION
Nadja evokes
with the shyness of Her hand
what the dreamer knows

SOLILOQUY
she is a diction
her syntax is subjective
glistening technique

THEATRE
She holds her being
behind the scented screen of dreams
gentle quarantine

ETERNAL
Holly breathes, swaying
berries nod their Spring belief
pianissimo

ABANDONED
Residue of pain
a broken hospital bed
left to rust in peace

COMRADE
parenthetical
luminous arpeggio
her soft subversion

LANKY
extending his neck
for Truth and a laugh
Nigel: postmodern giraffe

UNFETTERED
up to this and that
in his neon tophat
quite free: Timothy

GOLD SHIELD
morning creeps sadly
through the still cacophony
where policemen drink

TEACHER
the Poet folds his thanks
into the Quietude of Ink
the Master nods

CHANT
in a sacred grove
his breath encircles the Oak
the squirrels chant his name: “Dave”

LONGING
sparkling synonym
suburban hymn, in cashmere
her nylons, quite sheer

NYC POET
I can’t get to sleep
Without horns and car alarms
Urban lullabyes

CHERYL
She had the worst taste
In music but I listened anyway
I loved Her
