Backstory: Bamboo roots in a glass vase (top), shot with a 1969 Micro-Nikkor-P Auto f3.5 Non-AI (bottom) lens, mounted on a 2007 Nikon D40x. The D40/40x was an “entry level” DSLR. This offers one big advantage – because there is less going on in the F mount than on more expensive Nikons, the D40(x) will mount any lens Nikon ever made. There is no autofocus, no light meter, and only one mode – manual. I love it. The lens here, despite the rabbit ears, is actually an AI lens (note the auto aperture coupling ridge and the double set of f/stop markings).

Backstory: The entry level Nikkormat FTn (1967-1975) offered many of the features that later helped to make the pro-grade F2 (1971-1980) a legendary camera. Although modern cameras are completely automated, as my fallen comrade Ken BeSaw once said, “They don’t take the picture for you.” In my view using a work of art, like the venerable – and completely manual – Nikkormat FTn and/or Nikon F2 can be very helpful when looking to produce art. The images shown here were taken by the FTn’s descendent, the Nikon D40. I like to use my D40 in full manual, monochrome mode, with the ISO set to 400 (to emulate Tri-X Pan film). While the F2 was the top of the line, the FTn was the bottom – as was the D40. But from top to bottom Nikon makes a machine that artists can use to work effectively: a machine that inspires loyalty; a machine that is a work of art itself. I continue to use all three of these cameras and regard the F2 as the finest camera I’ve ever owned.
