Seid Angstlos! — Nina Hagen

für Erica M.

Backstory: I found this fearless Sunflower growing opposite the Clifton train station (an unlikely spot) in Staten Island. It is easily eight feet tall. The dedication is to Erica who is not eight feet tall but is a good colleague nonetheless.

The culture industry not so much adapts to the reactions of its customers as it counterfeits them.

— Theodor Adorno

Farewell Clove Lake Book Store, September 2, 1969 – July 27, 2012

Backstory: Clove Lake Book Store (run by Gay Runfola and then her daughter Dee) closed its doors this summer. The last Mom & Pop book store on SI was forced out by Kindles and Nooks – and real estate speculators who jacked up rents when a Walgreens went up across the street. Perhaps they will erect a CVS in place of the book store – mirroring what’s been done across the Island.
